A few months ago, I noticed that I was losing my grip on certain exercises. When doing pull ups and heavy dumbbell lifts, my arms felt like they could do more but my hands wanted to give up. So I started looking for ways to increase my overall hand and grip strength.
When in doubt, go back to the beginning. For me, the beginning is Bruce Lee. Lee was the reason I got into martial arts and fitness. I dug out my copy of The Art of Expressing the Human Body, an exhaustive study of Bruce Lee's fitness training methods. According to the book, the #1 training method Bruce used to develop grip strength was the wrist roller.
The wrist roller is a simply device that involves drawing a weight off the ground by rolling a cord around a tube similar to the way a winch retracts a cable. Inspired, I set about building one. It was an easy build that required minimum tools and it cost me nothing as I had all of the materials laying around my house already.
To build a wrist roller, you will need:
- An electric drill
- A sturdy pipe or rod at least one inch in diameter
- Some type of strong cord (I used 550 cord)
- A weight of some kind (plates, bricks, milk jug, whatever)
- A carabiner (optional)
Make the handle by cutting the pipe or rod just long enough to be able to hold it in both hands naturally in a horizontal position. Drill a hole through the center of the pipe and thread one end of the cord through this hole. Tie a knot in one end of the cord so it doesn't pass through the handle. Attach the other end to the weight. For my roller, I used dumbbell plates as weight and secured them by threading the cord through the center holes and attaching the rope to itself with a carabiner. This allowed me to change weights without having to tie the cord every time.
To use the wrist roller, stand naturally while holding the handle in both hands. Extend your arms to shoulder level. The weighted end should be resting on the floor. Using large rotations, rotate the handle with alternating hands until you run out of cord.
Below is a video I made showing how to make and use the wrist roller. If you like what you see, please give it a like and subscribe to the channel. I really appreciate it.
Keep training. No excuses.
